best for swimming and relaxing

punta uva: located south of puerto viejo, this beach features white sand, clear blue waters, and calmer areas ideal for swimming and snorkeling due to its protected reefs. it's a bit further from town and can be busy on weekends.
playa punta uva arrecife: this is another calm beach near punta uva, with smaller waves due to the reef break. the nearby jungle adds a lush, natural backdrop.
chino beach: situated near the town center, this beach features calmer waves than other beaches in the area. there are bars and cafes nearby with Wi-Fi, and it is a good spot for swimming.
best for surfing and nightlife
salsa brava: a world-renowned surf spot located near the town, known for its powerful, fast, shallow reef break.

playa cocles: conveniently located between playa chiquita and puerto viejo, this popular beach has a lively atmosphere and plenty of beachside restaurants and bars - it also has lifeguards, soft sand and consistent waves that attract surfers. the surf is particularly well-known, and you can find surf schools here, like surf the jungle surf school.
playa negra: this unique black-sand beach offers good waves for surfers and has a laid-back feel. its soft black sand is a stunning sight, and it is generally less crowded than cocles. however, be cautious of rip currents when swimming.
playa puerto viejo: this beach is located right in town and has warm, clear water with some large waves. it has a lively vibe and is close to many restaurants and shops. tide pools can be found here during low tide.
best for a nature escape
refugio nacional gandoca-manzanillo: this wildlife refuge features dense jungle that meets pristine, secluded beaches. trails lead through the rainforest to hidden coves, where you can spot monkeys, sloths, and other wildlife. the beaches offer opportunities for hiking, swimming, and snorkeling. Entrance is donation-based.
playa chiquita: located a bit further from town, this beach is quieter and has some picturesque, shady spots under trees. a reef break creates smaller waves, but be mindful of currents that can pull you toward rocks.

playa grande: a long, quiet beach located near the village of manzanillo. It's a good place for hiking, as it's connected to the manzanillo wildlife refuge.
